The latest in the U.S. Mint’s Silver Eagle proof coin series is available to order. This one-ounce 99.9% pure silver coin is the latest silver coin in a series dating back to 1986, when Congress authorized their production.
Mint, Design and Delivery
Unlike bullion coins that carry no mint mark, these 2017 Silver Eagle proof coins are marked with a W, signifying the West Point Mint. The coin’s face (obverse) is based on Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin made from 1916 to 1947. This immensely popular design was chosen for the Silver Eagle series from its inception in 1986 and features Liberty in full stride toward a rising sun, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The reverse features John Mercanti’s design of a heraldic eagle behind a shield, holding a ribbon inscribed “E Pluribus Unum” in its beak with an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in the left. Thirteen stars appear over the eagle’s head in an inverted triangular array. These designs have remained consistent throughout the coin’s production with only a few minor changes to the lettering and coin’s reeded edge.
The 2017 American Eagle Silver proof coins are packaged in a satin-lined blue velvet presentation case and include a Certificate of Authenticity.
