Before Zimbabwe’s runaway inflation caused the African nation to abandon its own currency in 2009, the government made a number of attempts to issue notes that its citizens could use to buy essential goods and services. Millions of ultra-high denomination bills were printed before the Zimbabwe Dollar was officially laid to rest. Today, business in Zimbabwe is conducted solely in stable foreign currencies like the U.S. dollar and South African Rand.
While they’re now worthless in their native country, the huge denomination bills have found new value as collectibles and gifts. Who wouldn’t want to have a few million dollars just sitting around? Especially when you can get it for less than the cost of a double-mocha latte?
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Promissory Note
The 50 Million Zimbabwe Dollar bearer cheque is different from a currency note in that it’s a promissory note from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to pay the bearer the face amount when the cheque is presented at a future time, in this case up to three months in the future. Of course, with inflation running at several hundred percent every month, it turned out to be a pretty poor investment.
But, hey, at least you had 50 million dollars to brag about. And now you can, too.
