Graduation is a special time in any person’s life, and what better way to commemorate it than with a gift of gold?
Gold Eagles, American Buffalos, Pre-1933 Gold Coins Are Great Options
The United States Mint resumed producing gold coins in 1984 for the first time since they were taken out of circulation in 1933 when private ownership of gold was prohibited by the Roosevelt administration. The first was the 22-karat Gold Eagle, a beautiful coin featuring Saint–Gaudens’ classic design of Lady Liberty walking confidently with a torch in her hand and the sun’s rays at her back. The reverse depicts a male bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, where a female awaits with her young. The symbolism is perfect for a young adult starting the next chapter of their life.
The Gold Eagle was followed by 22-karat commemorative coins and the 24-karat American Buffalo gold coin. Today, U.S. gold coins are available in a number of designs and in weights from one to one-tenth ounce. Other nations also make gold coins in different weights and designs, and private companies make gold bullion coins called “rounds’ and bars.
Besides current gold mintages, pre-1933 U.S. gold coins and other rarities are readily available and carry both historical and numismatic value in addition to their bullion worth.
Wish for a Shining Future
Giving gold for graduation is a great way to tell someone you not only care, but wish them a shining future. It has intrinsic value today and will likely be worth more, maybe a lot more, in years to come—a hope you share for them, as well.
