The History of the Vietnamese Dong Collectible Currency, Collectible Vietnamese Dong Notes and Release Dates

Coming from the exotic subcontinent of Indochina, the Vietnamese Dong is quickly becoming a favorite for banknote collectors around the world. This artful currency features many images from Vietnam's past, beautiful colors and artwork highlighting Vietnam's past and present.

The History of the Vietnamese Dong Collectible Currency

The Vietnamese Dong (VND) wasn't the original currency of Vietnam, as the Vietnam that we know today is only 50 years old. Originally a French colony in the late 19th century, the currency of Vietnam was the Indochinese Piastre. This would remain Vietnam's currency even after World War II, until the introduction of the Dong in 1946 in North Vietnam.

In 1953, South Vietnam followed suit, issuing dual denominated notes in Piastre and Dong. These dual denominated banknotes were circulated in parts of Vietnam that weren't controlled by the North Vietnamese communist forces. This changed in 1955, after the Geneva Convention officially dissolved French Indochina and recognized North and South Vietnam.

These two currencies ran parallel to each other through the entirety of the Vietnam War, with each country using their own seperate version of the Vietnamese Dong, which continued until the reunification of Vietnam in 1976.

After the reunification, a new Dong was issued that unified the currency. This unified currency went through two more issuances before it was seen as it is today.

The Vietnamese Dong Today

The collectible Vietnamese Dong Notes stand as a great piece of banknote art and is a great collection addition to any numismatic searching for a piece of modern eastern currency. Additionally, like the Iraqi Dinar, people have begun using the Vietnamese Dong as a scam centerpiece due to its low monetary value.

Please note: Great American Coin Company sells the Vietnamese Dong for COLLECTIBLE PURPOSES ONLY. We are a purveyor of numismatic collectibles and do not sell the VND on a speculation basis. Great American Coin Company is proud to offer the Vietnamese Dong in one-hundred thousand, two-hundred thousand, and five-hundred thousand denominations.
