Introduced in 1864, as Generals Grant and Lee traded important Civil War victories, these bronze 2¢ pieces helped make change during a severe wartime coin shortage. Mintages of 2¢ pieces, struck only at Philadelphia, quickly declined beginning in 1866 and were issued for circulation for the last time in 1872.
