Almost Good heavily circulated condition, but carries a fairly clear date. During the Civil War, coins were hoarded and in short supply. In 1865, the final year of the Civil War, nickel 3¢ pieces were introduced to help alleviate the coin shortage and to facilitate the purchase of postage stamps. Struck in declining quantities until 1889, nickel 3¢ pieces depict Liberty and feature a large roman numeral III on the reverse. After 1889, millions of 3¢ pieces were returned to the mint for melting, making them elusive today.
