CLEANING INSTRUCTIONSUncleaned Roman Coins or Dirty Old Coins, as they are often called, can be difficult to clean.  As these ancient coins have been buried in the ground for up to 2,000 years, many uncleaned coins are quite fragile.  Unfortunately, some ancient Roman coins will not show detail regardless of how much patience is put into the cleaning process. The good news… Many Roman coins will show detail if cleaned properly.  We recommend the following steps for cleaning these coins: Rinse thoroughly with regular water to reduce loose dirt & grime from your uncleaned coins.  Dry all coins thoroughly with a paper towel or cloth towel.  DO NOT AIR DRY COINS. Multi-day soaks in alternating baths of distilled water & olive oil. You may need to repeat this process numerous times. Scrub uncleaned coins with a soft bristled toothbrush & dry after each soak. You can also soak the ancient coins in white vinegar.  However, this is acidic, so we recommend that you not leave the coins unattended while soaking in this medium. For encrusted Roman coins, you can also use a dental pick to remove semi-encrusted dirt. However, practice great care while doing this, as the ancient coins are easily scraped and/or gauged.   For heavily encrusted uncleaned coins that do not perform well to the methods above, you can create an electrolysis machine at home. For directions on doing this, please do a Google web search for the term “electrolysis roman”          .
