The Unique History of the 1787 Fugio Cent

This coin consists of one of the most sought coins from the colonial United States.

The Fugio Cents consisted of the first coins issued by the fledgling United States Government. On July 6, 1787 the Board of the Treasure of the United States directed for copper coinage to be stamped the following - thirteen small circles link together with a larger circle in the middle with the slogan 'WE ARE ONE'. This is meant to symbolize the new 13 colonies. On the reverse of the coin is a sun dial, with the word 'FUGIO', which means 'Time flies'. Below the sun dial is the the phrase 'MIND YOUR BUSINESS'. The phraseology of the coin has been credited to Benjamin Franklin, and the coin has often been referred to as the 'Franklin Cent.

A genuine 1787 Fugio Cent in similar condition would sell for thousands of dollars.
