The Unique History Of The Buffalo Nickel

These coins are known as Bufallo, Bison, and Indian Head nickels. The first year this coin was issued was 1923, with two varieties minted. The first showing the bison on a mound, and the second redesigned with the bison on a straight thin line.

The coin was designed by James E. Fraser, with his initial 'F' visible beneath the coin's date. The bison was modeled after a buffalo named 'Black Diamond' who was housed in the New York Central Park Zoo.

No one knows how many of the genuine 1937-D three legged error coins actually exist. However, one thing is certain, these coins in proof condition sell for thousands of dollars, and are extremely rare.
