  • The Unique History of the 1877 Indian Head Cent

The original coin was designed by James B. Longacre, and was minted between 1859 and 1909. The Indian Head Cent, first issued in 1859, is not an actual depiction of a Native American, but the representation of Lady Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. In the 1859 version of the coin (Variety 1) a laurel wreath is featured on the reverse of the coin. This was changed in the second year of minting, 1860-1864 (Variety 2), with the reverse featuring a oak wreath with a small shield. A third and final variety (Variety 3) was issued in 1864, and included a redesigned obverse. The redesigned obverse included a slightly sharper portrait as well as the designer's initial 'L' (Longacre), located on the lower ribbon behind the neck. The coin was replaced by the Lincoln Cent in 1909.

A genuine 1877 Indian Head Cent in similar proof condition would be worth well over $5,000
