The History Of The 1796 Draped Bust Half Dollar

The 1796 Bust Half Dollar was designed by Robert Scot, with only 3,918 copies minted. Its original composition consisted of 89.24% silver and 10.76% copper, and weighed 13.48 grams.

Although the minting of the United States Half Dollar was authorized by The Act of April 2, 1792, no actual half dollars were minted until 1794. This variety of Bust Half Dollar (small eagle reverse) was minted for only two years - 1796 and 1797. Mintage or the United States Half Dollar ceased at the end of 1797, with no additional halves minted until 1801. In 1801 the obverse of the coin remained the same, however, the small eagle on the reverse was changed to the Heraldic Eagle.

A genuine 1796 Draped Bust Half Dollar in similar proof condition would be appraised at over $500,000.

This coin comes encased in an air tight acrylic holder to protect the coin for years to come.

All our reproduction coins comply with the US Hobby Protection Act - 15USC-2101 regarding the sale of reproduction/replica/copy coins and/or currency.
